The Defend Democracy Now Team recognizes that our country is at a pivotal crossroads. Which path will we follow? Will we fight to defend America’s founding principle—a democratically elected government “of, by, and for the people”? Or will we sit on the sidelines, watching the forces of authoritarianism take us down the path toward dictatorship?
Our Mission
We are committed to taking vigorous and persistent action to defend our freedoms against authoritarianism.
The U.S. was founded in opposition to a monarchy.
As we face new authoritarian threats, we must never kowtow to tyrants.
Challenges We Face—The Authoritarian Playbook
The administration in Washington is working to consolidate its power and establish dictatorial rule. It deploys tools right out of the authoritarian playbook:
(A) Destroying the institutions necessary for democratic self-government.
(B) Undermining our democratic election system.
(C) Rejecting the rule of law.
(D) Deploying an Orwellian system of “thought police” and censorship.
(E) Deploying ICE/troops to American cities and creating a police surveillance state.
(F) Corruption.
Join our Defend Democracy Now Team.
Together we will:
1. Monitor and identify actions in federal & state governments that threaten American democratic principles.
2. Prioritize the most critical threats at particular moments in time.
3. For each priority threat, develop and articulate specific actions that people can take to push back on the threat and uphold the values of self-government (popular sovereignty—of/by/for the people).
4. Send out Action Alerts to EAN members, communicating the urgent need for us all to take action to defend our democracy, and to share with our friends and families, spreading the word and amplifying the actions around the country.
The key is to take consistent action. We can’t wait for circumstances to get really dire. They’re already dire!
Together, we can—and must—defend democracy.
