Elders for Sound Democracy Community Meeting

Wednesday, April 15
10:00 – 11:30 am PT / 1:00 – 2:30 pm ET

Why We’re Seeing The World So Differently

We are living in an era where information is abundant—but shared understanding is not. As our lives move increasingly online, misinformation and disinformation spread rapidly, while trust in what we read, see, and hear continues to erode.

What happens when people no longer agree on the same basic facts—when each of us is navigating a different version of reality?

Join us for a compelling conversation with Alexandros Efstratiou, PhD, a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of Washington Information School. Drawing on his research, Dr. Efstratiou will unpack how today’s information environment is shaped—not just by false content—but by deeper, interacting forces.

Together, we’ll explore:

  • ·  How misinformation and disinformation take hold and spread

  • ·  The role of social polarization in shaping what we believe

  • ·  How platform dynamics reward outrage, speed, and division

  • ·  The influence of malicious actors and emerging technologies like generative AI

Dr. Efstratiou’s work focuses on polarization in social media and how our informational and cultural environments shape our perceptions of reality. His insights will help us understand not only what is happening, but also why it matters and what we can do about it.

Come ready to question, reflect, and engage in a conversation about how we make sense of the world—and how we might begin to rebuild a shared one.

After registering, you will receive an email from Zoom (no-reply@zoom.us) with a unique link to join the event. Please check your email inbox.
